• I run a community page which informs our audience about events and deals going on around town. We post many events on any given day. We’d like people to be able to view all our new posts and events in one feed–which we were able to do. However because the events default to show on the date they are held, instead of the date psoted, we are unable to use any of the events on our email lists and RSS feeds. It doesn’t pick up the events until the day they are happening (not the date posted), so it is virtually useless as a tool to inform the community (via an RSS feed or email summary) about upcoming events. This is very frustrating, and we have been unable to get any answers about how to remedy this problem. It would be nice if posts and events could also somehow share categories. This would allow our users to look up events and posts ny, say, City rather than having to check both places. I was hoping to install a program that would allow me to post things just once (rather than as a post and an event), but because of the RSS porblem we are forced to duplicate our work.

I do, however, really like the events lay out on the page in the View mode. I like that you can feature a picture with each event, also. I have not found another events calendar that I like as much from an aestetic standpoint. So, while it doesn’t completely meet our needs, I still enjoy enough aspects of the program to rate it 3 stars.

  • Hey there everythingbelton.com! Rob from Modern Tribe here — I just saw this review from a couple months back and wanted to follow-up, to both thank you for it to see if I could get some more information from you on your comments here.

You raise a great point on the RSS issue. As it happens, the way you’re requesting the RSS feed behave is how it used to until we changed it a few releases back to order more like a true “events feed.” The new approach orders by date an event takes place instead of when it’s published as you noted — the thinking being that users would subscribe and open their reader each day to see events taking place that day, versus the events published that day. But we’ve had enough feedback since changing it that we’re once again thinking we may not have found the right approach. Ultimately what threads like yours are making us realize is that we need a middle ground here — and while we aren’t sure what that middle ground is, it remains a priority to us.

We’re trying to gather feedback from our users on issues like this as we work towards our next big release, and as we make progress on figuring out a solution we’ll let you know. If you have other feedback or suggestions along the way as to how we can improve — for example, was the RSS feed the only issue that dropped us down to 3 stars? Would addressing that help make up the remaining 2, or are there other shortcomings? — we’d love to hear it. (Based on what you noted, it sounds like there are other aspects of the calendar that are serving your needs nicely…which is awesome.)

All that to say: thanks a ton for the honest review and your feedback so far! We hope we can do more to make this plugin even more meaningful for you (and hopefully earning a full 5 stars in your dot-org review) sometime down the road.
