Which version of WordPress are you using?
Are you editing the shortcode in the editor while in Visual or Text mode?
Do you want to change the color of just part of your trigger text, or the entire trigger?

This will work on current version of WordPress:

    [expand title="This title text is in <font color='red'>red</font>, <font color='blue'>blue</font>, <font color='green'>green</font>, and <font color='orange'>orange</font>"]Isn't it colourful?[/expand]

Starting with version 3.9.3, use of HTML is limited inside shortcode attributes. For example, this shortcode will not work correctly because it contains a ‘>’ character:

As of version 1.3.6 we have added placeholders that get around this issue. You can learn about placeholders by checking out the post: Collapse-O-Matic Expand Title with HTML Formatting

Finally, you can use Collapse-Commander to manage every aspect of the expand element.

Please let us know if that helped get your issue resolved.
