Coding an existing search field in theme’s header

I’m having trouble getting a search field already set up in my theme’s header. How do I get it to work? There is a serachform.php in the theme directory, and the header’s code for the search field is presently:

<input type="text" class="keywords" value="Enter Keyword(s)"/>

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
