  • A client wants to try ClubExpress for their membership site (Bay Area Travel Writers).

I’ve been down this path before and thankfully stayed away from VisionGate, so I thought I’d ask if anyone had any experience (good or bad) with ClubExpress.

Thanks for any tips, tricks, or tribulations.

P.S. I have some experience getting WP to run as membership software, but Bay Area Travel Writers wanted some features that sounded beyond the scope of WP (e.g. printing labels for members per event, event signup/registration and payment (discounts for members), membership payments through site with credit card (I know there’s a WP plugin (with PayPal) that does this). Thanks.

  • Got a note from another designer who used it:

As for Club Express, it was a bit tricky. We actually ended up using as little of Club Express as we could, due to its constraints on design freedom. . . . I think it works for many applications. However, it didn’t really suit the style and design we were going after. It’s pretty limited, in that you can only have one level of navigation, and certain components on the page have to be located in very specific areas.

With that said, if you take a look at how it all works before you start a site design, you might be able to work within its parameters. It club management features are pretty cool.

So a bit of what I feared: great features, not so great to work with or customize. Hmm, I’ll probably just do the site in WP–as is my usual solution!

Ended up going with MemberClicks. Just getting started now. I’ll post any (WordPress-) relevant information here.

But I’ve got to say, with UserMeta and UserExtra and more and more “member management” plugins popping up, I’m more than happy to stick with WordPress !
