CloudFlare settings complains in red “Unable to get current development mode status – Zone does not exist.”

DNS is set as a CNAME d.c of c.b.a
(a four-element domain name, where “.a” is “.com”; CloudFlare registered domain is the b.a domain)

I’m able to view the site’s home page, so the DNS entry exists and is working.

    Hi,

Please submit a ticket to https://support.cloudflare.com and we’ll be able to help you debug this issue further.

    Thanks,
    John

The error went away when in “CloudFlare Domain Name” I entered the domain name which is associated with the account. Apparently I’m not supposed to enter the subdomain for the site which I’m editing.

Correct, only fully qualified domain names are allowed. We’ll try to make this more clear in the next release. Thanks for the follow up!
