I have a number of template sites set up in a Multisite Network. My need is, on request, to create a clone of a site into the same network, carrying over all the content, plugins and settings of the original. I will then be pointing a specific domain name at the site. I currently have 3 template sites, but this will grow over time.

Users will be able to tailor their own site content as a subdomain of my network site, but web access to readers will be using the custom domain name.

Does anyone know a plugin that will clone the site, but change the URLs to the new domain name along the way? Or does the MultiUser Domain Plugin rewrite the URLs in Apache for me?

  • I’ve used the New Blog Templates plugin from WPMUDev and it works pretty well. It will create a new site on your network from an existing site on your network.

Everything is copied over to the new site, content, images, nav menus, settings, etc.. It will copy site1.example.com and create site20.example.com.

It will not create the custom domain mapping for you, or add the custom domain to Apache, but it gets you 90% there.
