Had the strangest experience yesterday. I built a tourism website for a client, they loved it, we were wrapping up training and I usually finish with setting up Jetpack’s Publicize feature to auto post excerpts to their Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and other social media accounts.

Almost all of the posts on this site are promotional or timely in nature (think “Press Release”).

The client adamantly told me in no uncertain terms that I was NOT to link WordPress to Facebook and Twitter. The client stated that they had been told by some expert at a conference that they went to never to auto post to their social media.

When I pressed for details they were unable to provide them, it had been awhile since the conference, but, the person who gave the advice was someone that they trusted implicitly. Aside from the “trust issue” (that’s another topic), has anyone run into this?

Is there a good reason NOT to setup JetPack’s Publicize feature? What could this person have been referring to? If there isn’t a good reason, how can I persuade them to turn JetPack and Publicize on? What am I missing?

I can’t know for sure, but the expert might have been talking about this:
Facebook Content Published Via Third-Party Tools Suffers 67% Fewer Likes

That post seems to say that it’s not true anymore, but at some point data suggested that Facebook would display a post in the newsfeed more if it was a manual post. If you were to use a third-party app (like Publicize) to publish an update, that post would be seen less.

I’m no Social Media expert, so I can’t tell you if that’s still true, but it might be worth running some tests for your client.
