Support » Plugin: Social Media Share Buttons & Social Sharing Icons » clicks to share via social media open a blank window

    Hi there,

I have the #2 option “What do you want the icons to do?” setup to simply Share on the social media platform of their choosing.

For instance: Twitter is only check-marked to “Tweet about my page” with the message I want in there. The problem is, since Tim doesn’t use Twitter, clicks to the main icon bring up a “page”: about:blank . . . only those that realize the tiny “Tweet” icon above the main Twitter icon can actually share it socially (via their own Twitter account with the message field available to them).

How can I make those main icons NOT open a blank page that is confusing to the masses? Thanks in advance for your help! Looks like a great plugin…

  • Update: please respond concerning the Google+ icon clicking — I found that Tim has a Twitter account after all! 😀

    Thanks Steve for reaching out.

I’m not sure what you mean – when I click on your Twitter icon, it only shows the tooltip, and doesn’t lead to any blank page. What browser are you using?

If you want to avoid the tooltip altogether, and allow people to tweet about your page after clicking on the Twitter icon, please have a look at this plugin https://www.ultimatelysocial.com/usm-premium/

    Who is “Tim”?

He doesn’t need a Twitter account. It’s enough if the visitor has one.

Clicking on G+ icon doesn’t open a blank window for me.

    Thanks for your quick reply.

When I click on the Google+ main icon, I am getting “about:blank” in a new tab in Firefox (latest version). In Chrome, I got nothing — the pointer finger (upon mouse-over) shows the following in the info bar: “javascript:void(0);” but nothing pops open or takes me to a new tab at least. So it appears to only be a Firefox thing?

Yes, it seems to be an issue in Firefox. Let us look into this.

What option do you have selected under question 6 – that click opens it in same window, or new window?

“Who is Tim?” — Tim Ryan, the site owner, has a Twitter account (above).

    Re: Firefox – OK.

It is set to Yes to whether open a New Window or not.

Please set it to “No”, i.e. not open a new window.

For now, or for-ever? I would like the site to remain open, while the viewer can open a new window/tab “next to” the site, so that if the visitor wished to go back to the website they are not potentially off the site for good….? Is that your suggested fix to the Firefox issue? Or is that a temporary setting suggestion while you look at a solution?

Temporary fix. We have it on our list to look into the Firefox issue.

Very good. All set for now

Also, the mobile icons, when pressed for a second, show the 3 options: Open, Share, and Save Image — which is fine. The title of that little pop-up, though, is “Javascript” — might be better titled to let users know that is a Share function? This was in Apple Safari for iOS.

And how is a site visitor to know to press and hold for a second when it looks like something to tap? Tapping takes you to the person’s/company’s social media page — but what if they want to Share the page-link on their chosen social media platform? Might it be better noted to have a tiny message/caption under the icons to “Press and hold to see options” or similar? I didn’t know that was even there until I pressed on it a bit…

    Just a thought.

And, any chance mobile can be bottom-right, while desktop can be middle-right?

“Open, Share, and Save Image” – what button are you referring to exactly?

Note: for new types of issues, please open new threads.

For mouse-overs, you can set those under question 6 in the plugin.

If you want to give the icons different selections for mobile, please check out this plugin https://www.ultimatelysocial.com/usm-premium/

You said: “Open, Share, and Save Image” – what button are you referring to exactly?

Please reread my first paragraph… “Also, the mobile icons, when pressed for a second, show the 3 options:”… key word mobile.

I’ll start new threads on other stuff. Sorry.
