It seems that JetPack is stuffing the header of a post with far too much crud that slows the page load times severely. Automatic should clean it up and not use so many separate modules which also slow rendering times.

    Hi @veganadvocate

One of the beauties of Jetpack is that you can turn off any of the modules that you are not using.

    You can see more here:

    https://jetpack.com/support/control-jetpack-features-on-one-page/

From there you can select the modules that are useful to you, and deselect any you do not need to use.

i have done that, it seems that it is still very top heavy with a lot of crud

Jetpack does include quite a few features – Depending on the settings you’ve activated and the new elements you added to your site thanks to Jetpack, an impact on your site’s performance could be expected. For example, if you’ve added Like buttons, Related Posts, a few widgets, sharing buttons, and infinite scroll, that will indeed increase your site’s loading time.

Currently, I see that you have 18 of our features active.

As with any other plugin, when enabling settings, the decision rests in which feature is worth the performance affect it could bring to your site. In general, any features that use images or call resources from third-party services (like the sharing buttons or the Facebook and Twitter widgets) will have an effect on your site speed.

If you feel that Jetpack features are making your site slower, but don’t know what particular feature is to blame, you can always log into your wp-admin dashboard and head to Jetpack > Settings and deactivate each module, one at a time, until you can pinpoint the performance dip on a specific module. You could then decide whether that feature is worth the impact it has on your site’s speed.

Another test that could really help (but one that should be done in off-peak times as far as your visitors are concerned) would be to deactivate all other plugins except for Jetpack to see if it truly is the cause for the load, or if another plugin is directly conflicting with Jetpack and causing load issues itself, triggering higher load for Jetpack functions to begin with.

    Hey @veganadvocate,

I checked your site’s speed and I can see that is indeed a tad slow.

Besides deactivating the Jetpack features you don’t use, I also see that you have many plugins active and other stuff happening on your site at the moment:

    https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hardcoregames.ca%2F

This slow time may be a plugin or theme conflict, and Jetpack is simply a component of it. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and switch to the default Twenty Seventeen theme. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of the problem.

If you can install plugins, install https://wordpress.org/plugins/health-check/ and on the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

I would recommend following the suggestions listed at the above PageSpeed link to make sure that your site is operating as best as it can. If that does not help, I would also recommend getting in touch with your site’s host to see if anything can be done to up the site speed.

    Hope that answers your question!

part of the problem is the jetpack is crimpleware as they want $

they also abuse privacy which is illegal too

I am the host and my server is plenty fast and uses SSD for all content

    Hi there

    > part of the problem is the jetpack is crimpleware as they want $

Can you elaborate on that? There’s nothing we add to free sites that would be removed if you purchased a plan, so I’m not sure why you think Jetpack is ‘crippleware’.

    > they also abuse privacy which is illegal too

Again, could you provide more details about how you think Jetpack abuses privacy. We’d be happy to address any concerns you may have.

    Thanks!

WordPress is GNU licensed so any plugin or theme has to be similarly licensed as they are all derivative of the core

so this is why I am critical due to the abusive violation of the Free Software Foundations idea of GNU

    Hey @veganadvocate,

Like all plugins are required to be hosted here on the WordPress.org plugin repository, Jetpack is indeed licensed under GPL2:

    https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/browser/jetpack/tags/9.5/jetpack.php#L9

If you have spotted something in our plugin that might have violated it, please report it in detail so we can take a look.

lots of violations with functions being paywalled

SEO paywall, so no registration with search engines

    not good at all

and bloatware on top of that

The GPL does not mandate that features be free of charge: https://opensource.org/licenses/GPL-2.0

SEO paywall, so no registration with search engines

SEO Tools are free as of Jetpack 9.5, released today: https://jetpack.com/2021/03/02/jetpack-9-5-level-up-your-site-with-custom-recommendations/

Regardless, these SEO Tools are no a requirement to be listed in search engines. Search engines index all public sites.

And, even though SEO Tools are free as of today, you’ve been able to use Jetpack to verify ownership of your site in search engines for free for years: https://jetpack.com/support/site-verification-tools/

and bloatware on top of that

Make sure that you’re only using the Jetpack modules you want.

Most of Jetpack is designed to speed up your site by taking load off of your server, like our site accelerator https://jetpack.com/support/site-accelerator/ or stats https://jetpack.com/support/wordpress-com-stats/ subscriptions https://jetpack.com/support/subscriptions/ and related posts https://jetpack.com/support/related-posts/ which are all processed on our end (rather than hammering your database as these features traditionally do).

With that said though, the more Jetpack modules you add, the more your site has to initially process, just like it would if you added a separate plugin for the features, so always make sure you’re only using the features you want.

Regarding overall speed and load, here’s an excellent independent report: https://mattreport.com/jetpack-speed/

At this point, I’m really not sure what you’re referring to. What drive your server uses has no bearing on “legal obligations.”

Jetpack is free to use. You only need to pay if you want additional features: https://cloud.jetpack.com/pricing

Those prices cover the server resources to provide them (like remote backup storage), as well as continuing development and support.

If you don’t want those additional features, you’ll never have to pay anything.
