  • Last night I spent several hours trying to troubleshoot why I could not access WordPress.org to create a forum post. I had purchased a WordPress.org website through GoDaddy, and I was operating under the assumption that because I had an account name, email, and password set up on the website, that I would be able to access the WordPress.org forums with that account information.

Perhaps the root of this confusion is thinking behind statement “I purchased a WordPress.org website”. Well, you did not.

You purchased a Webhosting service from GoDaddy that may have come with the WordPress software pre-installed. WordPress.org merely develops the free WordPress software that anyone can take and use for free, and hosting companies like GoDaddy often take this free software and provide it to their customers.

WordPress.org has absolutely nothing to do with GoDaddy, or any other hosting provider. Also, WordPress.org does not sell anything to anyone, and other than these hosting recommendations, has no direct hosting partnership with any hosting provider.

“You will still need to register even if you already have a WordPress.org website.”

See above. That would create an even bigger confusion, because, in reality, no one has a WordPress.org website — because WordPress.org does not host or provide websites. What people have is a website running the WordPress software, which they host with their own various hosting providers (aka self-hosted WordPress site).

So then how about making the account support email available on the lost password page or within the support page?
