The plug-in is a plug-in that is enabled when generating thumbnails for the media library. Checked thumbnails will not be generated if media is uploaded when the plugin is enabled. However, if you uncheck and use a plug-in that Regenerate Thumbnails, all thumbnails will be regenerated.

Apologies if I’m not very clear. This is an area of WP that I don’t know much about, and I’m still not quite sure what this plugin is doing.
If I understand it correctly, this “Disable Generate Thumbnails” turns off the checked thumbnail sizes from the set of thumbnails that have been “registered” in the system, so that for any new Media uploads those thumbnails will not be generated (and existing thumbnails for existing media items are unaffected). This sounds like the behaviour I want when uploading images (using “Media from ftp”), since those media items do not need woocommerce and shop thumbnails.
What I’m not understanding is how I re-enable generated thumbnails to include (or re-register) the woocommerce and shop thumbnails, since I do still need those thumbnails for other media items that I will upload (e.g. for new products). I don’t want to “Regenerate thumbnails” for existing media items. I think I just need the inverse of “Disable Generate Thumbnails”, so that the full set of thumbnails is restored for my system.
Or do the full set of registered thumbnails return if I restart my system (e.g. close down the WP session, and then start it up again)? That is, your “Disable Generate Thumbnails” has an effect only for that uploading session?

I can’t try a plugin if I’m worried about unexpected consequences for the website. I’m not a professional developer, just a volunteer building a site for a charity. I do not have a test site I can experiment with.
I tried to explain my concern above.
Thanks for your time, I’ll just continue with having more thumbnails generated than I need.
Hello, you may install WP on a local installation to make tests. It’s not very complicated.

The plugin seems to work well.
In case this is of use to others, the clarification of functionality I was after is the following. As advertised, you can use this plugin to disable selected thumbnail sizes. Those sizes will remain disabled for any media upload while the plugin is active. You can use the same plugin to restore the full set of thumbnails (or any subset) by deselecting those you had disabled previously, or to restore the full set by deactivating the plugin.
