I’m having some inconsistent behavior with the circular grid display of a smugmug album. Some albums display perfectly fine in a blog post – for example:

But other albums are displaying with the circle stretched into an oval shape. The stretch corresponds to if a photo is portrait or landscape.

I’ve tried various settings on both the Photonic and Smugmug side and I can’t figure out what is making some albums display this way and others display fine. Even in the same blog post, I can post two albums and one will be fine and the other won’t.

This also happens if I switch to square thumbnail grid. Some albums display the clean squares and others display in rectangles.

Is there a website I can see for this?

    Sure, here are some examples:

Here’s a page with the issue.

Here is a page without the issue.

Here is another example of a page that has the issue – I have two albums embedded and one has the problem and one doesn’t.

All are embedded with the same exact shortcode format:

    [gallery type='smugmug' view='images' album='RxH5Nh']

    I am curious – why do your image links include i2.wp.com? E.g. https://i2.wp.com/photos.smugmug.com/SFBayAreaAdventures/Mt-Tamalpais-from-Stinson/i-dBZwvWd/1/Ti/DSC_9441-Ti.jpg?w=750&ssl=1 ?

That is most definitely not from Photonic – it almost seems like your site has something that is downloading images from Photonic to WP’s CDN (which is used by the JetPack Photon module). You have some other plugin that is doing this.

If you look at the page without issues, its links are directly on SmugMug. E.g. https://photos.smugmug.com/OtherPlaceAdventures/Great-Basin-National-Park/i-hqqrJkQ/0/Ti/P1120850-Ti.jpg.

I disabled the Jetpack settings and cleared WP cache. Didn’t help. Also, on this page, the images were never pulled to the CDN, links are direct to smugmug and still have the issue:

Given that the uneven images are returned by SmugMug directly, can you verify the gallery display settings on SmugMug itself?

For the albums where you are seeing the issue, in SmugMug what is the value you have set for the “Gallery Style”?

All galleries (working and not working) are set to Collage Landscape (default).

Thanks, by the way, for helping with the troubleshooting on this one.

I am not sure at this point why SmugMug is returning uneven sizes – I have never had that happen in all the examples I have seen so far.

I have checked a few more things, and what I have seen is that for certain of your albums, SmugMug has created thumbnails that are preserving the aspect ratio. E.g. If you see what SmugMug has for your SF Bay Area Adventures album, you will see this: https://api.smugmug.com/api/v2/album/ZqqSNK!images. The images are not square, so Photonic is stuck pulling those images.

I have a couple of suggestions – one would be to switch to using the “Random” layout, which will show the full sized images, but scaled in a justified grid.

If you don’t like the random layout, my other suggestion would be to control the sizes with some custom CSS. I will need a little bit of time to work this out, so please give me a few hours.

Fantastic! You gave me just enough that I was able to solve the issue. It was on the smugmug side. In case you have this reported again, here are the steps I took to solve the problem.

    1. Went to Gallery Settings and switched the style, temporarily, to “SmugMug”.
    2. Under Gallery Settings, when you select the “SmugMug” style you see an option to toggle Square thumbnails off or on. This option is only available when the SmugMug style is selected, so it is important to switch it.
    3. My gallery had the thumbnails set to square ON (even though the gallery was NOT showing the thumbnails as square).
    4. I switched to square thumbnails OFF and saved the gallery.
    5. I went back to Gallery Settings and switched square thumbnails back to ON.
    6. This time, my gallery showed square thumbnails, as did the API and the corresponding Photonic page.
    7. On Smugmug, I switched my gallery back to the original style and everything seems fine now.

Hope this helps if the issue comes up again.

That’s excellent! Thanks for letting me know. I knew that the “SmugMug” setting has an option for square thumbnails, however since you had said that all your galleries were set to display as a collage, I couldn’t understand why this was happening.

    This information certainly helps me!

    Good luck with Photonic!
