Child themes - how to create and use (8 posts)

I am using the Frontier theme but need to create a child theme to make changes to the layout. The Codex says you can't make changes to the theme code because once you press the Update button in Editor, the changes won't be saved.

There is nothing in the wordpress dashboard Editor that lets you create a child theme. How do I Save As [theme]-child and use that code in the dashboard.

Do you have access to your website's folders and files, aka "FTP" access?

    Kaniamea,
Thanks, I have been reading the codex file on child themes.

    Andrew,
I haven't created the wordpress website folders yet.
I do have FTP access through my ISP host member's area. They are hosting my wordpress site.

    My problem is this:

I started creating my home page in the dashboard and added an icon image in the header but it repeats across the page. I found the no-repeat code snippet. So when I went to Editor it shows the code for my theme but I know any changes you save after clicking Update won't actually be saved, so I need to create a child theme.

All it says in the codex is:

""Create a directory in your themes directory to hold the child theme. The theme directory is wp-content/themes. ""

But WHERE do you do that in the wordpress editor dashboard. There should be a menu selection to save a child-theme as your default code in the dashboard.

To clarify, you only made a CSS change?

Yes I would probably need to do it in the css. But where do you do it in the Editor part of WordPress dashboard? Version 3.8 is very bare bones.

Thanks I will try the plugin.
Have you used child themes yourself? I feel I will still need to create one.
