child theme vs parent theme footer.php

I am trying to edit the footer.php in storefront theme. I copied footer.php to themes/storefront-child/inc
Editing it shows no effect, but if I do the same change in footer.php in the parent theme directory, it works. What is strange, when I remove the footer.php from the storefront-child/inc the whole footer disappears.
So it seems the file probably is on the right place, but somehow the parent theme goes first.
