I'm not sure where to look to make changes to my child theme footer..I want to edit the copyright info so it isn't overwritten every time the core theme is updated.

I know it should be in the footer.php files, but I'm not sure how to distinguish between when its the footer files for the parent or the child & also unclear if I should be making the changes from within the public_html folder or www folder?

If there is no footer.php in your child theme and there is no filter or theme option to change the copyright info then you'll have to copy footer.php from your parent theme to your child theme and edit it directly.

If I moved the footer.php over to my child theme folder, as there any php/css that will allow me have the copyright updated.
