 * Greetings.
 * I’ve been trying to set up a child theme for X Theme. But every time I go to
   preview it, it looks nothing like what I have. Like not even close. So, that
   said, I’m afraid to activate it.
    I’m using the Child Themes plugin.
 * Here’s what the test looked like:
    [http://themetamodern.com/wp-admin/customize.php?theme=x-child](http://themetamodern.com/wp-admin/customize.php?theme=x-child)
 * And here’s what the site really looks like.
    [http://themetamodern.com/](http://themetamodern.com/)
 * Hope this is enough to see.
 * Thanks,
 * Eric

 * We can’t view the first link because we would have to be logged in. What did
   you include in your child theme? You created a new style.css file, I assume.
   Does it have any CSS in it? Did you create a functions.php file like it says
   in [the instructions for a child theme](http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes)?
   You should go ahead and activate it to see how it looks. You can always switch
   back to the parent theme.
 * And is the X theme the actual name of the theme? Did you get the theme from the
   [WordPress Theme repository](https://wordpress.org/themes/) or is it a commercial
   theme? Many commercial themes make it very difficult to create a child theme.

 * Thank you for your response.
 * Yes. I have the new Word Press X Theme. I bought it so it must be “commercial”?
   It came with some free templates which were quite easy to set up. The X Theme
   site files are on another’s server who’s hosting me, so It’s very difficult to
   get to the actual style sheets. All the HTML files I open are labeled “Inactive”?
 * I’m using the Child Theme plugin, so not much is left up to me – I think I clicked
   all the right boxes and followed their directions well enough. I got it so I
   wouldn’t have to risk any errors on my own with the setup since it supposed to
   do it for you. And I’m a beginner.
 * Easier said than done….

 * Have you seen the info on the X theme site here?
 * [https://theme.co/x/member/kb/how-to-setup-child-themes/](https://theme.co/x/member/kb/how-to-setup-child-themes/)
 * That site is also where you should ask for additional help from the developer.
