    hello all
I am complete newbie to wordpress so far install by one click installer provider by my hosing company. so everything was setup without any problem. Had good research / YouTube videos and manage to make basic website with twenty thirteen theme.

Have read lot about child theme but cannot understand the purpose of it. do I have to have child theme? People saying ones you update theme all custom made changes will be lost, Do I have to update the theme I am using? what benefits & advantages are for child theme?

I also cant figure out how to make “site info” display in centre of footer (this is not text alignment / decoration/ padding issue) I have 35px footer and I would like to display site info copyrights in centre, at a minute it displays in last line on the web very bottom.

    thank you for reading.

do I have to have child theme?

No, not if you’re happy with the options your theme (and WordPress) offers you. But if you want to make changes beyond that, then yes, you’ll want a child theme.

People saying ones you update theme all custom made changes will be lost,

Yes, you can edit your current theme’s files all you want, but when you update the theme, your changes will be lost.

Do I have to update the theme I am using?

YES! If you don’t update your theme, your plugins, and your WordPress core, then you become vulnerable to security holes that are fixed by updates. Additionally, you lose out on any new features that the updates have.

what benefits & advantages are for child theme?

The benefits are that you can do things beyond what your current theme offers. Suppose for instance, that your theme offers you a “light” and “dark” option. What if the dark is too dark, or not dark enough, or you want a red option as well? You can create that using a child theme.

The downside is that you need to become proficient with HTML, CSS, and possible PHP. But everybody starts at the beginning with those; if the rest of us have learned them, you can too. Most of what you need to know you can find on google.

Please create a separate thread for this. One thread, one topic.
