 * Hi, I’m using a Twenty Eleven Child theme on my site [http://www.websafeforkids.com](http://www.websafeforkids.com)
 * I have some pages that are being used as ‘Parents’ with several ‘child’ pages
   in some cases.
 * I’d like to have a child menu, that shows just the relevant pages for that parent
   that appear on the parent page and other child pages as the drop down from the
   top looks cluttered.
 * Hope youcan help
 * thanks

 * Use a [custom menu](http://codex.wordpress.org/Appearance_Menus_Screen).

 * The custom nav menu would appear at the location available in your theme and
   set at:
 * Admin Dashboard>Appearance>Menus>Theme Locations …typically one is the main horizontal
   nav at the header and one is in a sidebar for vertical navigation…custome emnus
   need to be supported by your theme and the locations are controlled by theme…
 * You can also use a custom widget area if you prefer in a specific location by
   adding the custom menu to the custom widget area.

 * Thanks, am trying to get my head round it now – I may well be coming back to
   you
 * will this allow me to have – using the custom menu widget – different menus on
   different pages to reflect the child menu of any given parent?

 * I can create the menus, but I’m not getting how to apply the different menus
   as custom menu options to particular parent pages

 * You don’t have that many menu items now, why not just use a flat pages menu?
 * Anyway, with work much is possible…
 * Also, you do not have to use the built in menus, you can create a page template
   and add your own hard coded menus…
 * Most avoid this as it requires much work on each new page added…
 * I think many use the cat menu as the main horizontal nav and the show the pages
   menu in the sidebar, with posts as the loop, as this will keep the most recent
   content on homepage, automatically add new cats to cat menu and pages to page
   menu…no on going work required once setup…

 * This site is still WiP – what do you mean by flat pages menu?

 * No, farrrrr to many children pages for that
 * I think the answer is I will need to look at creating different templates and
   applying them to the relevant parent/child to show the correct sub nav menu

 * Well have successfully created templates, but now, how to tell it to add the
   other menu on it
