When trying to edit categories, we get this error:

cheatin’ uh? sorry, you are not allowed to access this site.

However we can create new categories, and edit them fine.
Any suggestions on where to look?

From the sidebar, I go to products, then categories under that listing.

This is the url it takes me to when I click on the category title, or the edit button underneath:

Also when I click the quick edit link and update, a red bar with a “-1” appears

The link looks correct. I think maybe your database is corrupted, else your user roles/permissions are.

At WooCommerce > Status > Tools, try the “Reset Capabilities” option. And make sure to disable any user role/capabilities editor plugins.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the reset capabilities did not help.
What else can I try?

Make a new/test admin account and see if it has access.

Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce and switch to a default WordPress theme, then see if you can access the categories.

I should add, that after I did the update, all of the category images had disappeared too.

That is likely unrelated to the permissions problem, but worth noting.

The “cheatin” message happens to me sometimes after leaving “customize.” Check your URL after you publish and exit customize, you may need to delete the end of it for proper functionality.
