I have just finished version version 2.0 of the Charleen theme and updated it for 1.0 and 1.0.1. There are also a few other improvements:

    • Now has max-width so it doesn't get wider than the header photo.
    • Better typography
    • Column now extends to the bottom.
    • Fixed Mozilla bug.
    • Better padding.
    • Header a little more prominent.

This theme is well suited for both shorter entries and longer essay entries. It is different from most blogs you see out there but is still easy to read.
See an example of Charleen in action.
To use this theme just download CSS and image from here and put them in the same directory. Then change the CSS link in your <head> to point to that file instead of wp-layout.css. That's it. :)

I've added a zip archive if you want to download everything at once.

matt, thanks for the charlene theme. I have been modifying it a bit here on my site
http://readout.org . however i do have a question. if you notice that when the content portion is sparse, the bottom of the site overlaps with portions of the menu. is there anyway to rectify this? thanks

Sk, the only way would be to modify the theme to use floats and then put a clearing break after both floats.
