• I currently have a website running through a company and have become unhappy with them. I would like to create a new website with WP but I do not want to lose my URL/Domain name. I cannot afford to have my site down a week or longer either. I already own the domain name as well.

Would the best solution be to create a WP site with an alternate URL (example-.com) then once the site is finished change the URL to what I want it to be (Example.com)? Or is there a better solution? I just cannot afford to have my site down for more than a week.

  • First, see Moving_WordPress. You should also be aware that moving a domain name to another registrar/host can take 72 hours or more.

I looked through the moving_wordpress but it did not specifically answered my question.

I just want to know if I can change the URL of my future word press site with/to my current URL once I finish creating it. I need to make sure people/customers don’t have to try and find a new site all together.

Where will you be creating this new site?

My plan was to use something like host gator to post the website, but I planned on creating it. Maybe I don’t understand how WP works. I just thought you have to have a host domain name/URL and your good to go. Basically start creating, WP does all the other work with the help of plugins, themes, and such.

That’s correct. In this situation, I think your best bet is to set up your new hosting account and ask your new hosts if they can supply you with a temporary url (most hosts can). Install WordPress and get your new site set up. Then, when you are ready to launch it, transfer, or re-point) your existing domain name to your new hosts/site. again, your new hosts should be able to help you with this but, be warned, once underway, the transfer process can take 3 days to fully complete.

When your domain name is finally pointing to your new WP site, you can change the domain name within WordPress. See Changing_The_Site_URL for details of how to do this.

Ok thank you, let’s see if I can keep from messing this up.
