changing themes…

  • hi,

I am interested in changing themes.
however I have edited the header and footer php files for my current theme Twenty Ten and I am curious what happens if you try and install a new theme over the current one.

I have had problems previously trying to install new themes were it has destroyed my entire site and given me server errors.

    thanks,

    john carruthers

First, never edit TwentyTen (or any other Theme) directly. Instead, create a Child Theme, and make all your edits there.

Second, installing/activating another Theme will not in any way whatsoever impact any other Theme you have installed. If you install/activate another Theme, switching back to your previous Theme is as simple as clicking a link in your Dashboard. No changes will have been made to one Theme simply by virtue of installing/activating another Theme.

So, that said: try out other Themes to your heart’s content! You can always switch back to TwentyTen at any time.

    hi chip,

    thanks 4 your reply.

seeing as I have edited the sidebar, header and footer a little, what will happen if I install another theme over my twenty ten?

I was using that genesis theme and tried to uninstall it and it started giving me server side errors, so now I am a little hesitant to muck about seeing as I am a few weeks into my site…

    thanks again,

    jc

ps. btw. I uninstalled the genesis completely and went with twenty ten because I found it easier to manipulate…

check it out… real pieces of the moon.. !!!

Themes are not installed “over” other Themes. Each Theme is installed in its own subdirectory in \wp-content\themes.
