Changing Theme Layout

I am using the deCente theme currently and I am considering switching to the responsive theme, but no matter what I do with both themes, I cannot get the two or three widgets that are supposed to be at the bottom of the homepage to be in columns instead of rows. I want it to be three across the bottom, but they go one all the way across the bottom and another all the way across the bottom bellow that. Can you help me?
