Changing the Template

Okay, I went to the template page after I logged in. When I tried to change the template, the button that probably was supposed to be submit says “(You cannot update that file/template: must make it writable, e.g. CHMOD 666)”. Did I install it wrong? How do I do this?
I’m still pretty new to php and completely new to MySQL. I’m also totally lost.
