# Changing the default language

 * Hello, I have a website with two languages “English” and “German”. The content
   was in German and I translated it into English. Everything is fine, but now I
   need the English version to open on the main address without a subdirectory and
   the German version with a subdirectory.
 * Now I have the English version on /en/ and I don’t see how to switch. If I change
   the content language in the settings, the translations get lost.

 * Indeed, changing the default language will invalidate existing translations.​​
 * ​​To change the order that the language get to be displayed on the website please
   follow this steps:
   Go to:WordPress Dashboard –> Settings –> Translatepress General
   Tab –>  Activate the following: <strong>Use a subdirectory for the default language
   </strong>Then just drag the secondary language where the default language is.

 * The subdirectory should remain as it is, otherwise, all content must be rewritten
   in English and then re-translated into German.
