    I can’t figure out how to change the color of the border on the right and left side of the header. I tried to tweak #branding and #branding img but no luck. Also, I am using a child theme. I appreciate the help!

    there is no left/right border on the header image.

    the image might be scaled because it has not the exact dimensions or proportions for the header – in the default theme 1000 * 288 px

    Thanks for the reply alchymyth. Do you know how I would change the color around my header img?

    the color on the left and right of the header image is caused by the left/right margin in the style of #branding which you have added to style.css of the child theme:

    #branding {
    border-top: -1px;
    margin-left: 5px;
    margin-right: 5px;
    border-color: rgb(9, 81, 129);

    possibly remove them;

    and reconsider how to get whatever layout you are trying to achieve.

    Thank you, alchymyth!
