Changing tags automatically

Still trying to get this function to work. My pre tags, since they strip all whitespace, look dreadful! The syntax highlighter still does not replace the code in these fields with anything a little prettier. I’m thinking this is because it only filters specific items like the_content. Anyone know the filter function I can use to apply it to other blocks of content on my website?
