changing status in HTML email

    I’m using PHPmailer with an HTML email to send to postie and if I send a standard email, I can change the status, but I can’t seem to figure out how to change the status in an HTML email. I tried to add status: publish to the first line and to the alt-body and to the subject but it was ignored.
