My weblog has been online for 2 years and it has a huge amount of PR2, PR3 and PR4 posts. The structure of my permalinks is:
Google news wants me to add numbers to my url, otherwise they will not use my site as a news source. So it has to look like
Date being for example 20080105
If I do this, I will lose all my pagerank pages. So is there a way to keep the pagerank and the date? For example only having post for 2008 have a date and keeping everything from 2006 and 2007 without a date in the URL?
Won’t your pagerank correctly follow a 301 redirect? I always thought that pagerank would get passed along when Google’s index changed to reflect the new URL.
And WordPress (2.3 and up) is now smart enough to remember old permalinks and send a 301 redirect to the new ones when you change the permalink settings. This was done specifically to help search engines like Google, and as a side effect to help with the broken links problems after such a change.
Hey, no guarantees. I don’t know what Google will really do, but I think it should correct itself eventually. Just make sure that your old links still work when you change the permalink setting. They should cause a redirect.
