• I am new to WordPress and want to change my permalink structure from the default to something more search engine friendly. I have no coding experience to speak of. My blog is at http://thesavingsprincess.com

I am hosted by FatCow and installed WP using their one-click install. I am using CuteFTP to upload files to the server.

When I changed the permalink settings, I was told that my .htaccess is not writable, so I should update it, copying the provided code. I searched for the .htaccess file, but could not locate it. I know some FTP programs hide certain files, so I followed CuteFTP instructions to display hidden files. Still no .htaccess.

I created an .htaccess file in Notepad as instructed by the Codex. I copied the provided code into this file and uploaded it to my server. The permalinks are still not working. All I get is 404 Errors.

What can I do to make my new permalinks work?? I have followed all the instructions in the Codex and still nothing. Please, any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

  • Sounds like what you have done is correct. Are you certain you loaded the .htaccess file into the root folder of your WordPress installation?

I’ve double-checked the .htaccess file and it’s definitely loaded in the root folder. I’ve also got the ‘Permalinks Moved Permanently’ plugin activated.

I noticed some folks had said they made changes and then had to leave them for a few hours before they began to work. I tried that too, left it overnight, but things still aren’t working.

Is there something I’m missing? I’m really hitting my head against a wall here. Would changing the permissions on the .htaccess file to 777 help? It’s currently set on 666.
