• Hello,

I have forgotten my password for my admin account and I get an error when I try to complete resetting of password.

I was able to have it send me the email with the link to make the update, I was able to insert a new password but when I hit the submit button (“reset password”) I get this error:

    Forbidden

You don’t have permission to access /foldername/wp-login.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I ever had bad experiences with Better WP Security. Don’t get me wrong, this is a great plugin – but it also can be dangerous if you did something wrong.

My suggestion – you may try but I guarantee nothing:

    1. Rename .htaccess file to something else (perhaps: .htaccessBackup).

    2. Try to login.

    3. If you can login, then restore the .htaccess file by renaming it back from .htaccessBackup. Reconfigure the Better WP Security settings and save it. My suggestion is to disable all the features in Better WP Security.

    4. But if you still can’t login, it means my tricks fail. Success or not you MUST rename it back to .htaccess.

Many configurations of Better WP Security plugin will alter the contents of .htaccess, improper configuration of .htaccess can cause error on your website.

You may gain access to your admin area by temporary disable (or rename) the .htaccess file. You may need to edit the content if you understand. But remember backup before you do any alteration of it.

Phew! Thanks so much! That worked!

Do you have an alternate to this plugin? Or is turning off the .htaccess settings sufficient? I know I had trouble with this plugin when I was trying to have it use my SSL. Since I wasn’t selling anything I didn’t use SSL settings.

Thanks so much for your help!
