Changing my blogs URL

Okay, I’ve already changed my blog address in the general settings.

I want my blog URL to be:

http://example.com

instead of the wordpress address

http://example.com/wordpress.

I’ve located the index.htm and .htaccess files in the file manager and I know I have to move them from public_html/wordpress to public_html. But I’m not sure what directory I supposed to be in when I make the move… the home directory or the root directory? Also, when the instructions say move, they mean move and not copy and paste, right?

I’ve been trying to get this resolved for two days. I make a little progress each day, but I’m afraid to do anything without confirmation.

You need to have ALL of your wordpress installation files and folders in your root folder (public_html) if that is where you want your blog to be, not just index and htccess……and yes, you want to MOVE them not copy and paste….

Thanks Trisha. Somebody else told me that if I already have http://example.com/wordpress, then I can leave the files where they are and just move the index.php and .htaccess from public_html/wordpress to public_html. Sound right? So I can just move those two files in the root directory and be good to go?

So, I have a similar issue, but everything is installed in /blog, not /wordpress and I don’t have an .htaccess file that I can find. So, can I just go into the settings, change the blog URL to root, leave the WordPress URL as is and call it good? I have taken this over from somebody else adn I really don’t want to break the site by doing something wrong like this.

willie, I couldn’t find my .htaccess file either. The dot indicates its hidden. When you log into your file manager it should give you an option to show hidden files. (I just learned that today. hahaha)

I just went and checked….. I can find the .htaccess file in the public_html, I can’t find it in the public_html/wordpress in the root directory.

I’m beginning to think it can’t be done. (sigh)

It CAN be done… I’m doing it on mine. Follow the guides as posted… however, I’ve never been able to find my .htaccess file either, and it works for me (host is iPowerWeb.com–don’t know if that has anything to do with it).
