Support » Fixing WordPress » Changing from static homepage to blog homepage. Will URL forward?

  • Hi-

I run a blog and have been using a static homepage.

And the blog homepage is at website.com/blog/

My question: What happens if I set the blog as the WordPress homepage, to replace the static homepage.

So now my main URL (website.com) will show the blog.

But what if someone goes to website.com/blog/ … will it be error 404 or will WordPress “know” to forward it? That’s my question. Because I’m pretty sure people have linked to my blog URL

No, they will see the original, empty, “blog” page you created and set as the POSTS page. (Unless you delete the “blog” page itself, in which case they will see 404 error page).

You can put some content on this page to let visitors know where the blog has moved to, or better yet, delete the page and use a plugin, code in your active theme’s functions.php file, or .htaccess rules to automagically redirect the non-existing /blog URL to the new blog page (homepage).

Yes. Without making a redirect it will show 404, but you can create a redirect with a plugin like https://wordpress.org/plugins/redirection/ or with a simple 301 redirect in your .htaccess file and then it will go to the home.
    something like…
    #Redirect a single page:
    Redirect 301 /blog http://www.domain.com/
