Changing data in mysql database not having an effect

I accessed the mysql database where wp is installed and changed some widget text directly in the database, but when i saved and went to the website, the text was not changed. I went back to the database and it was as if I hadn’t changed a thing (although I know I saved my changes). Any help greatly appreciated – how can i change data directly via the database?
