Changing Content Color in Default Theme

  • Good Day

    I have just installed WordPress and want to change the background color of the content area (where I type my posts, or others read them). I have located the CSS file and the content for it. It currently only has this line in it:

    #content {
    font-size: 1.2em
    }

    If I add a background color to it, it moves everything to the left, and covers up the border and has some white space on the right side, between the content and right links.

    Is it possible to change the color of the content background, in this theme, or do I need to select another theme. This theme looks fine, but if necessary, I can choose any theme, as I am not too concerned about the layout.

    I appreciate any comments and suggestions!!
