    Good morning,

I am sorry in advance if I’ve posted this in the wrong group I wasn’t sure of the right place to post this.

When my install was done, it was done by my hosting company who sent me my wordpress log in details. I have read on the web a step you can take to help secure things is to add a new user which I create, give the new user admin role and then delete the original user that was setup.

I was hoping someone could confirm for me that this is acceptable to do.

My fear is if I delete the original profile I will in essence delete my own access to do anything.

I know a very basic question I’m sure but I’m really hoping that someone will take the time to give me good guidance on this one.

    Thank you in advance.

    James Peter

If you assign “admin” role to the new user, you should be able login the dashboard and perform admin role.

You were given good advice. Create a new admin user, give it a non-obvious username to be kept confidential and a public nickname to be displayed. When you delete the original admin, assign any content it has created to the new admin account.

Oh, hopefully obvious but worth stating – use a strong password.

    To summarize:
    – In dashboard, go to users > Add new
    – Add a new user with admin rights (don’t call it admin)
    – Log out of WordPress
    – Log back in as your newly created Admin user
    – Delete the default Admin user. Note: When you delete the original admin, assign any content it has created to the new admin account.

Good to hear a host giving that advice. My first WordPress host years back, (still today) gives you the admin username and doesn’t allow you to change it…..

Some useful literature btw as a new user

Wow I had thought I was going to have to wait for a single reply didn’t realize I would get five so quickly … THANK YOU! to each of you that took the time out of your day to reply and help me out … I am very grateful. Now I’m going to need to learn how to provide appropriate recognition for those that offer the help.

You are all saying the same thing so I will take this as my cue that I am good to go setting up a new user, logging in under the new profile and then deleting the original profile created.

Can’t THANK YOU all enough have a great day!

    James
