• I tried to change a margin in the main.css for one of my widgets and lost all formatting completely. I reloaded the main.css with the backup but it didn’t fix the problem. I tried deleting the theme and reloading and now none of my media shows up and there still is no formatting. I have no idea how to even tell what went wrong. Is there anyone that can help me fix the mess that I’ve made? The media is still in there, it just wont show up and I think that I screwed things up further by changing file permissions. I am using the Custom Community Theme with a Child theme activated.

If anyone can help I will greatly appreciate….

  • Did you figure it out? The site is loading and looks O.K.

Yes – I reset all file/folder permissions to 755/644 although I did notice many folders set themselves to 764 after the change.

I still don’t understand why the simple change to main.css changed things to begin with. I literally only changed a margin from 0 to 20px. Any idea? Will a simple change like that actually change something else that is critical?

Thank you kindly for your response.

A simple or big complicated changes in any CSS file won’t ruin site’s layout or design, unless the code is invalid. One missing : or ; or wrong syntax could ruin the function of that CSS file entirely because browsers can’t interpret it correctly.

Changes made directly to theme files is strongly not recommended, all the changes should be done in child theme only.

Thanks Paul, I have a child theme installed and see where to make custom changes – just have to learn how to write the changes instead of trying to edit what is already in place. Time to take off the ‘doing hat’ and go back to my ‘learning hat.’ Thank you for your response.

Sorry, this is only related to your post in that you are accessing a file that I can’t access. How did you get into main.css to alter it? I have been trying to alter the main.css file and can’t find it anywhere….

CPM-sv, you may be able to find it in Appearance > Editor in your dashboard. Make sure you are logged in to the site as an administrator.

@cpm-sv – please do not post in other people’s threads – stick to yours here:
