• In moving my WP blog from GoDaddy to a new host, a tech from the new host set up the blog but lost all the pages, posts, category links and some other content. My custom theme and plugins are still showing.

I backed everything up to my hard drive before the switch. Can anyone tell me if I just need to ftp re-upload certain files to restore this data? Which files would they be?

Anything else I have to be careful about so I don’t mess it up further?

    Thanks.

  • Did you export your pages and posts as part of your backup? Or, did you back up your database? Pages and posts are stored in your database (not in your web files), but you can also export them as XML files.

If you backed up your database, the Codex has instructions for restoring a new site using the backed up database files. If you exported an xml filed to back up your content, you can easily restore that way.

If you didn’t do those things, though, I think you are out of luck.

In the future, when upgrading OR moving hosts, I suggest that you back up the database, export all your content in xml files, and also back up the web files (to save your customizations.)

I did both kinds of backups. I did the backup thing within WP where I have the DB emailed to me. I unzipped it to my desktop and couldn’t make sense of it. From what you say, it sounds like I need to find the Codex instructions.

    Thanks.
