Change WPMU Multisite install to single site install

  • Hi guys,

I have 2 sites installed as wordpress multisite, how do I change them from a Multisite install to single site installs?

Even if you can recommend some commercial tools or software that would be appreciated??

Also I am having problems with WPTwin when trying to make a backup copy of my WPMU site, has anyone used it successfully to backup and duplicate WPMU sites? What about backupbuddy? Anyone used these successfully or any issues with Godaddy hosting? any feedback much appreciated

    cheers,
    Dave

  • Hi Dave,

Since you have 2 sites, I would suggest you to get your sub-site exported and imported to somewhere else before turning it into single site installation.

Once your sub-site is readily imported to your new destination, you can delete the previous blog from the multisite and remove the multisite script on your wp-config.php.

    Thanks arrentan!

How exactly do I get the sub-site exported and imported to somewhere else??

And how do I remove the multisite script on my wp-config.php?

Are there any plugins or step-by-step tutorials to do this?

thanks for your help, much appreciated 🙂

Go to Tools – Export to export your posts. That’ it. then copy over the themes and plugins you were using and set them up again.

That’s currently the only way. No, there is no plugns for this.

Thanks Andrea! Sorry took so long to reply!
Bummer there is not an easier way but you seem to know your stuff and are very helpful on here so I guess Tools > Export will be the best way, thanks again

P.S. I have changed various post and category names so there seem to be various 301 redirects of old urls to new urls I am guessing this type of data would be lost if I just backup and move the posts? Anyone have any tips for porting my site from WPMU to normal WP and what if any data will be lost or need to port across?

Anything stored in the wp_options tables will not transfer over. unless you wanted to port that table too, but you asked for “easy”. 😉

Any other edits, like htacess tweaks will have to be re-done (if needed) on the new site.
