Change width and sidebar of "Twenty Ten" (3 posts)

I am currently building a new homepage and I am using the standard theme "Twenty Ten" (it looks like this at the moment: http://cgden.net/wordpress/ )

I want to change 2 things:
    1) The width of the blog postings is too small/narrow. Since I only have limitied knowledge of CSS I am not sure which files and lines I have to change. Does anyone know which parts I have to edit to make my blog posts appear wider?

    2) The widgets on the sidebar have no visual division. I have found a theme called Organic Theme 1.9.4 that does actually what I want to achieve: http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/organic-theme
As you can see each widget header (for example "Categories") has a black background and the rest of the widget points has a grayish background.
What is the easiest way to get these visual blocks of theme "organic theme" into my "Twenty Ten" theme?

Don't edit the Twenty Ten theme! Your changes will be over-written the next time you upgrade WordPress or the theme. For this reason, it is recommended that you consider creating a child theme for your customisations.

That did not answer any of my questions... (And I am already using a child theme)
