Change tag base – 301 redirect old indexed links?

  • I keep reading conflicting guidance on this. I’m happy with my permalink structure – would love to lose ‘/category/’ but read of many issues with sub-categories for people that tried this – including using plugins. I’m focused on tags.

Within WordPress Admin I can change the tag base ‘tag’ by default to something else. I’d like to change it to suit how I use it. Possibly ‘apps’. My tag pages are indexed at Google – i.e. http://mysite.com/tag/procamera/. I think the change will be fine internally but do I need to write a 301 to redirect old URL to new URL for external links (in this case http://mysite.com/apps/procamera/)? If so can anyone advise of the appropriate htaccess 301 code to redirect from old structure to new?
