Can I change the text “Product categories” to something like “Shop By Category”?

    Hi there 👋

I’d recommend using the free Loco Translate plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/loco-translate/) to change the dynamically generated text within the WooCommerce plugin, or any WordPress plugin or theme. Although this plugin has the word translation in the title it is also used for changing the dynamically generated text of the same language into different phrases or words.

The plugin will allow you to translate the text/phrase itself by following this process:

    The steps are as follows:

    1. Go to Loco Translate > Plugins
    2. Select the plugin that you need to change the phrasing for (WooCommerce).
    3. Click on New Language, then select your current language.
    4. Choose `Custom” for the “Choose a location” option.
    5. Search for the phrase you want to edit, then add your new “translation” and save.

    I hope this helps!

For more information on what that involves, have a look at the following guide: https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/woocommerce-localization/`

That’s strange! Could you please provide us with a link to your site and with a full-screen uncropped screenshot in order to understand where the string is located and provide you with guidance?

I recommend https://snipboard.io for easily sharing screenshots – please follow the instructions on the page, then paste the URL here. It works with Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

    Thanks, @maxbyer!

It sounds like those strings are coming from your theme. Could you please check your theme with the Loco Translator plugin in order to see if you can find and modify them?

    Cheers 🙂

Well, that’s odd! It sounds like this issue is directly related to the Loco Translate plugin.

So in this case, I would like to recommend you to contact the Loco Translate support team so that they can help you on how to target those specific strings and modify them. Here is the link to their support forum:

I ask the question there and they sent me back here. I knew that was going to happen.

I’d recommend using the free Loco Translate plugin to change the dynamically generated text within the WooCommerce plugin, or any WordPress plugin or theme.

As much as I appreciate your recommendation, this is incorrect information.

Loco Translate does not change dynamically generated text, nor does it claim to. See FAQ: How do I translate my posts / taxonomies / settings?

Here are again. I am a one person support team and I cannot provide personal help to everyone with a WooCommerce localisation problem.

My plugin is a PO file editor. It allows translating of any string defined in woocommerce.pot (or your theme’s POT). This is the same as using any other PO file editor. If the product categories are in the POT then they can be edited.

(I think we’ve established it is not the dynamic text, but the heading that the OP is asking about, in which case…)

If the string “Product categories” in the “woocommerce” text domain has been translated, the the editor has done its job. If a string is not being used, then (as suggested) the theme could be overriding it, or a plugin setting could be overriding it. See FAQ: Why can’t I translate these specific words?

    Hi @maxbyer

If you are referring to the side bar widget title, you can change the text from Appearance > Widgets > Product Categories: https://snipboard.io/PwTbqr.jpg

Please let us know if that works.

Thank you so much, that did it!
