Change Plugin Filename

When I first released my plugin I used the following naming convection

name-of-plugin/plugin.php

I’ve since realized this is bad form and would like to rename it to

name-of-plugin/name-of-plugin.php

but this seams to break automatic updates. Any suggestion on how to go about doing this?
