Change Permalinks For Future posts only? (5 posts)

I have been using the Default (Ugly) permalink structure for some time. I didn't know there was an option to have the links displayed differently.

Is there a way to change future post links displays without past links being affected?

I attempted to change the structure, but then the blog suddenly disappears with a 404 error.

Okay, let me put it another way. If I change the permalink structure to a "prettier" format, does this change all the links, including hyperlinks that have their origin with the blog itself?

Old posts with links using the default style won't be changed.

However, those default style links always work, regardless of the permalink style.

    Thank you for your reply.

There is an instruction: "You should update your .htaccess now."

I'm not up on this stuff, nor do the tech's for our server know what this means.

How do I update the .htaccess?

Your server's techs don't know about .htaccess?!? Oh dear...

Have a look at this paragraph from the Permalinks page and see if it can help: http://codex.wordpress.org/Permalinks#Creating_Rewrite_Rules_.28.htaccess.29
