Support » Fixing WordPress » Change Permalink Structure without destroying old links

  • Hello everyone,

Iā€™d like to change my permalink structure from
    /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/
    to
    /%category%/%postname%/

but doing so will mean that all pages indexed on google and other search engines become invalid. Therefore Iā€™d like to either
    – keep old post permalinks unchanged and apply the new permalink structure to new posts only
    or
    – change all permalinks but keep the old permalink addresses as some sort of mirror addresses

Can someone please help me out?

    Thanks šŸ™‚

  • i’m not sure either can be done. can anyone back me up on this?

Well, not sure really..being that I’m not a permalink professional or anything. I had someone make up a redirect for me.. all my “old” ones are now redirected to the new permalink setup that I made.

    Example:
    domain.com/post-name.htm

    Now goes to:
    domain.com/id/%post_id%

But, I’m not sure if that would work for you or not.. meaning, if you could tweak the redirect that was made for me.. =P

/Not sure if that would interest you though either.. just was throwing it out.. that’s all. šŸ˜‰

redirecting sounds like an awesome idea since it seems to be the only solution. Can you please help me out with this?

Do you also know how google will react to the redirects?

I could try, but..I’m not a pro though lol. Here’s the thread on that redirect I was talking about.

As far as I know.. all the links of mine, that came up before in Google.. were: domain.com/post-name.htm

And after clicking on them from the google results.. they took me to the proper place, without a problem. But, some of them don’t.. not sure why.. but.. yeah, that’s the thread above there..

I’ll have to get those guys to look at this thread then. šŸ˜‰
