    hello to all,
some day ago I realized that many contacts arrived to my website from US and Ukraine.
I decided to install the plugin IP Geo Block and block these countries.
It seemed it worked properly til this morning when I realized that my access was in one of the blocked countries.
I tried to verify it changing my IP (I use a VPN) but my IP, for the website, remained in US.
I think someone logged in the website or anyway created a second fix vpn for accessing in the website, so I don’t think that changing the password could change the situation.
    Any solution?
Thank you so much to all

    Hi @maxhax,

I’m sorry but I can’t get your point.

It seemed it worked properly til this morning when I realized that my access was in one of the blocked countries.

So you were blocked at that time, weren’t you?

I tried to verify it changing my IP (I use a VPN) but my IP, for the website, remained in US.

Where did you find it, on IP Geo Block settings page? Please check your IP at http://www.myipaddress.com/ for example. If your IP is shown differently on IPGB settings page, then your server may be placed behind some proxy in US. Is that right?

In that case, you can find a grayed out text in the text box at “$_SERVER keys to retrieve extra IP addresses” in “Validation rule settings” section.

    HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR

Then please put that text in the text box.

anyway created a second fix vpn for accessing in the website,

    What did you mean?

    hi @tokkonopapa,
thank you for writing me back: it has been difficult to me too explain something like this. I try better, but anyway I tell you that now it seems it is working properly.
this is what happened: some day ago I downloaded your plugin for block IP. it was working well but this morning a message came informing me that I had to check the block rules cause otherwise at the next login it should have been impossible to log.
first question I got: if I have an IP that is under block, how can I login?
so I went to check the rules and I realized in validation rule setting / your IP address country that I was logged from US.
I had a VPN connection over switzerland so I disconnetted and tried a new country, but with the same result.
I checked also a second website related with the first, even with your plugin and the same blocks, but over there everything was ok.
second question I got: if the problem is not in the pc, is it between my vpn and the login page of the website?
third question I got: is it possible something like this?
then I tried the last thing so I changed the password, with the block unactive, and restart the pc.
since that moment it is working again with the original blocks !!
last questions: what is happened? how can I avoid this problem in the future?
I have never been blocked and I checked my ip in several websites confirming the ip showed by the software I have.

    Hi @maxhax,

    Thank you for the details.

this morning a message came informing me that I had to check the block rules cause otherwise at the next login it should have been impossible to log.

That was a warning of “preventing self blocking”:

    Warning

In that case, please execute “Scan country code” at the top of “Validation rule settings“. Sometimes, a certain IP is registered as a different country code in different databases.

sample1: Same IP but different country code

    sample2: JP or US?

Here are my answers against your questions:

    1. Please refer to “I’m locked out! What shall I do?” in FAQ, “What should I do when I’m locked out?” or just rename the plugin directory such as ip-geo-block to ip-geo-block- in your /wp-content/plugins/.

    2. I’m sorry I’m not sure. This plugin just picks up the IP from some PHP environment variables.

    3. One possibility is that your IP may be assigned dynamically by the VPN connection. So please compare IPs between your sites.

    4. I think there must be a reason. Only I can say now is please keep watching your site.

By the way, one thing I should ask you from my side is where or which country is your server placed, in Switzerland or in United states?

In some cases, your server may send requests to the back-end of itself. So if your server in US and you configure IPGB to block any requests from US, those would be blocked. So you should put your server’s IPs into the “Whitelist of extra IP addresses prior to country code“.

This is not related to this issue, but please be careful.
