Category widget – only last half of categories display (M-Z)

    Hi. I’m a newbie at WP (using 2.9.2) and could use some help.

    In my “Categories” widget, only those categories beginning with “M” thru “Z” actually display on the page so, in other words, only the last half of my categories. (And yes, there are posts in the A thru L categories.) It was working fine but now is screwy.

    I know how to get to (and edit) the category-template.php if that’s where the problem is but I haven’t the slightest clue what to look for! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this??

    Deactivate all plugins — does it solve the problem?
    If not, switch to the WordPress Default theme to see if that solves it.
