Category links not working

Hello.
I’m using WP 3.2.1 and I created a network with subfolders. I created a new site and added a few categories to the posts. Now, when i try to go to the categories permalink, it keeps giving me the “we cannot find what you are looking for”. So the URL that it gave me was:
Not working.
http://www.example.com/site1/category/cat1/cat2/But this is working:
http://www.example.com/site1/blog/category/cat1/cat2/Does anyone know why the “blog” isn’t added to the url? Also, is there a way to not have the blog there or is it mandatory? Thanks.
