Category Base Getting Doubled Up

  • Hello all. I searched the forums and haven’t found anything that has helped yet.

    WordPress: 2.5.1

    Whenever I try to go to…
    http://mydomain.com/category/catTitle/page/2
    …I get a 404 page. Going to…
    http://mydomain.com/category/category/catTitle/page/2
    …the second page of that categories posts shows up properly.

    In Settings->Permalinks I have the following set up…
    Common settings->Custom Structure: /category/%category%/%postname%

    I have erased the .htaccess file and remade it via the Admin panel and it still doubles up the category/category part of the URL.

    I also run WP-SuperCache, but have also tested a fresh, pre-altered htaccess file and the issue still shows up.

    If I change the Common settings->Custom Structure to…
    /%category%/%postname%
    …then the URL…
    http://mydomain.com/category/catTitle/page/2
    …works like it should, but my post’s URLs that should appear as…
    http://mydomain.com/category/catTitle/story-title
    …return 404s and only work as…
    http://mydomain.com/catTitle/story-title

    my brain hurts. while i wait for replies I am going to work on some cron job scripts. hope someone can shed some light or point me in the right direction

    EDIT: Below is my htaccess file as it stands now, and YES the filename does read as .htaccess

    # BEGIN WordPress
    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
    </IfModule>
    # END WordPress
