    Hi

Newbie to WP so I’m sure I’ve made a idiot mistake here

I’ve search and found a few articles but still can’t get the categories to work or display in the url

For example the category made is “help”

In Permalink Settings I’ve changed to /%category%/%postname%/

In Yoast SEO / taxonomies I’ve changed to show “Categories in search results”

When I view the pages it shows pages listed and the category (help), when I view the page details it shows that its within a category (help) but the url slug is not showing the category so only demo.co.uk/test-page not demo.co.uk/help/test-page

    Can anyone help

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hello,

    Thanks for reaching out.

First, we will like to mention that you cannot add a category to pages. We suspect you are referring to posts. To provide some context, can you share the URL of the website and the specific post where you are experiencing the issue.

thanks and thats where I’m going wrong as I’m trying to add categories to pages.

I was told this was an option as I’m rebuilding a static site but want to hold onto current page names to hold rankings on google so example demo.co.uk/help/test-page.html

I’ve installed a plugin so that pages get called .html but on the current site I have folders called “help” and was told by using a category this would achieve it…by the sounds of things given the wrong advice

Is there any other way to hold onto current page names ?

    thanks

If you’re rebuilding a static site and using a plugin to have your pages end in .html, you may consider reaching out to the developer of that plugin for further assistance.

Also, since the pages didn’t exist before on your WordPress site, you should be able to maintain the same name, however without .html. And by default, you cannot have pages with categories in WordPress.

yeah I’ll try contacting them to see if they can help.

regarding page names maybe I didn’t explain myself correct.

I’ve tried to maintain page names that are on my current static site, so using example page http://www.site.co.uk/help/word-press.html

The plugin now shows the .html but if I use backslash in the page name it changes this to – so http://www.site.co.uk/help/word-press.html becomes http://www.site.co.uk/help-word-press.html this is the problem

    Hello,

Can you temporarily deactivate the Yoast SEO plugin to see if the issue persists?

    (@streamingdancefitness)

deactivated it and made no difference used slug help/word-press hit enter and WP converted it to help-word-press.html 🙁

This means it is not related to your use of the Yoast SEO plugin since the issue persists even without our plugin active.

The developer of the plugin you use to add .html to the end of your URLs will be able to provide guidance on what you are trying to achieve and how best to resolve the problem.

    Thanks!
